Q: Hi; what is the best heartworm medication that i can give my dog? (shih tzu approx. 20 - 22 lbs) (he has been using heartguard) how often does he need to be tested for heartworm? is six months long enough to treat him for heartworm? (we live in ny state) my vet is always after me to give him all kinds of shots & tests. it is hard to know if they trully need it or the vet is just trying to get more $$$.
A: Heartgard is an effective heartworm preventative. many veterinarians recommend year round prevention for heartworm disease and in those instances testing may only be required on a once a year or once every 2 years basis. if the pet is on heartworm prevention for 6 months only, then testing may be required before restarting the medication.

Q: Is revolution all that it promises to be where the heart worm/flea and tick treatment is concerned. i have used advantage for my dogs and it seems to work but the heart worm pills seem to be something that my dog always knows is in his food and eats the food and spits the pill out. i need a comparison of heatguard and revolution. thank you for your help
