Heartworm meds
Q: Our 10 1/2 year old buster has been on heatguard which we always received at through his vet. i do not remember ever needing to provide a stool sample so how does the vet determine whether buster is negative? also, if we decide to order the heartguard through petmeds do need to provide a prescription? thanks!
A: Heartworm infection is determined by a blood test. for pets on year round heartworm prevention where there has been no lapse in medication, annual testing may not be necessary. this is up to your veterinarian. heartgard does require a prescription to be dispensed.

Cold weather & driveway heat salt
Q: My puppy is 10 months old almost 11 months. he likes to stay out in the snow and sometimes it's very cold, 14 degrees or below. can this cause problems later on in his life? we never leave him out more than a half hour each time. he is a german shepherd. also i have always been told that the salt we use to melt the ice and snow on the sidewalks and driveways are very bad for animals, is this true and if so what kind of damage does it do. thank you
A: Salt is only damage if dogs walk on it excessively. some dogs are sensitive to it and can cause paw irritation while others have no problems to it. an individual issue. i would not worry if she likes it outside, as long as you limit exposure when severely cold

Valueheart
Q: I have bought heartguard in the past, but am trying an off-brand b/c of the price. what do you know about valueheart? it contains ivermectin like the others. it is not made in the us.
A: It is equivalent to the plain heartgard and not the heartgard plus which contains ivermectin and pyrantel. we carry a generic equivalent made in the u.s. to fda standards called iverhart plus that will save you about 25% over the price of heartgard plus. the product you speak of purchasing cannot legally be sold in the u.s.a.

Heartworm prevention and flea protection
Q: I have two golden retrievers and i usually give them sentinel and advantage. after reveiwing your webpage on different types of medications, i am wondering why i couldn't give my dogs heartgard for the heartworm prevention and advantage for fleas. sentinel is such an expensive product and i don't see the benefits of it when i compare the information. am i missing something?! if advantage kills the fleas then why bother with the sentinel? i can get the heartworm prevention through heartgard... having two dogs isn't cheap so if i could save some money here and there it would really add up. thanks for your help! jan mullennix
A: You've answered your own question. it certainly makes sense to make the switch.

The right dose
Q: How do you buy heartgard, when you have a growing lab-puppy? three weeks ago, he weighed 10.3 lbs. and this week, he is 17.7 lbs. and growing. thanks!!
A: You begin by using the appropriate strength. in this case "blue" for dogs up to 25 lbs. once the pet is 26 lbs or over, you can give 2 of the "blue" if you have any left over. then use the "green" through 50 lbs. a new prescription is required for each change in strength.
