Heartworm medication
Q: Hi; what is the best heartworm medication that i can give my dog? (shih tzu approx. 20 - 22 lbs) (he has been using heartguard) how often does he need to be tested for heartworm? is six months long enough to treat him for heartworm? (we live in ny state) my vet is always after me to give him all kinds of shots & tests. it is hard to know if they trully need it or the vet is just trying to get more $$$.
A: Heartgard is an effective heartworm preventative. many veterinarians recommend year round prevention for heartworm disease and in those instances testing may only be required on a once a year or once every 2 years basis. if the pet is on heartworm prevention for 6 months only, then testing may be required before restarting the medication.

Unflavored tablets
Q: My vet has told me to order unflavored (instead of the interceptor flavor tabs) heartworm medication for my chihuahua (9 lbs). she is being treated for allergies and is not to eat anything but the prescribed dog food and no flavored heartworm medication. do you have this kind of heartworm medication?
A: We do not have unflavored interceptor, but we do have the unflavored heartgard tablets(not to be confused with the heartgard plus chewables)

A: We suggest you check with your veterinarian, as the product literature suggests it should not be used. a call to merial customer service advised us it could be used.

My pup seems ill !
Q: This morning after i feed my 2 pound, 3 month old chihuahua, i gave her her first heartguard plus med. for dogs 1 - 25 lbs. she ate the whole chunck. this afternoon she vomitted mucus. about 1/2 hour later she vomited twice. it was a fair amount and was not just mucus both times. now she just seems more sleepy and clingy than usual. is she going to be ok ? was the med too much for her or is this common. please help; i'm very worried ! thank you.
A: The heartgard plus could have upset her stomach. she'll be fine. next month i would suggest giving her the dose after a meal.

Mange
Q: My dog is very red all over and is doing alot of itching and i was wondering if you had any dips or shampoos that you could recommend for him. my neighbors dog looks like it has mange and my dog is starting to look just like him. also wanted to know if you should give a dog heartguard if it has heartworms thanks for your time!
A: Your veterinarian should examine the dog to determine the cause of the skin problems. then an appropriate treatment can be recommended. i would not give heartgard to a hw positive dog. he should be treated for hw disease first.

Prescription
Q: Is my veterinarian required to complete your request to authorize apresription for heartgard if faxed to them? thanks
A: Depending on what state you live in, certain states require the vet to give you a prescription, other states, as well as the avma consider it unethical not to.

What type of heartworm med should i buy
Q: I have two rescue greyhounds, one is a 70lb 5.5 year old female and one is a 80lb male 7.5 lb male, what is the best. we have a small back yard and they are outdoors a good amount. what is the best kind of heartworm medicine to buy for them? thank you.
A: To protect against heartworms, as well as round and hookworms we would suggest iverhart or heartgard. if you need protection against fleas & ticks then you would need revolution.|you can compare all these products on our website.

The right dose
Q: How do you buy heartgard, when you have a growing lab-puppy? three weeks ago, he weighed 10.3 lbs. and this week, he is 17.7 lbs. and growing. thanks!!
A: You begin by using the appropriate strength. in this case "blue" for dogs up to 25 lbs. once the pet is 26 lbs or over, you can give 2 of the "blue" if you have any left over. then use the "green" through 50 lbs. a new prescription is required for each change in strength.
